Chords for Chordoma

On November 9, 2017 some of North and South America’s top jazz musicians will gather at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in Toronto for a musical celebration. Gathering along with them, will be Canada’s restructuring and insolvency community taking the opportunity to honour one of their own. The profits from this one-of-a-kind event will fund the quest for a cure for a rare form of cancer called Chordoma.

The Cause

The passion behind Chords for Chordoma comes from Steven Golick.  In September of 2012, Steven noticed that he couldn’t walk in a straight line – despite not drinking a drop.  Although he had no other symptoms, he and his wife Greta soon found themselves sitting across from a diagnosis no one would want to face. Steven had a Chordoma – a very rare form of cancer that occurs in the bones of the spine or – as in Steven’s case, the skull. The doctors explained that Chordomas are slow growing. Steven’s tumour was massive.

His treatment included a 12 hour surgery, radiation treatments and a long recovery.  So far Steven’s Chordoma has not come back.

It probably will.

Chordoma returns.  Finding a new course of treatment will be difficult. Steven has reached his lifetime limit of radiation and more surgery can be dangerous. That is why research is so necessary.

Steven knows he’s a lucky one. He is an optimist, a jazz musician and at the time of his diagnosis and treatment, he was one of Canada’s leading insolvency lawyers. He has had outstanding medical care and a community of family and friends encircling him with love.

Chords for Chordoma is Steven’s way of giving back to other Canadians with Chordoma and their circles of love. The evening brings together his passion for jazz music and the passionate restructuring and insolvency community of which he is a part.  His goal is to raise $250,000.

The Honouree

Recognizing Steven’s passion for the law, the evening will also honour Dr. Janis Sarra, University of British Columbia Presidential Distinguished Professor, co-author of Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law of Canada and The 2017 Annotated Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, and founder of the Annual Review of Insolvency Law, who will be receiving a lifetime achievement award for her outstanding contribution to the insolvency and restructuring community.
